Revamping His Wardrobe

Hi Vestologie. I have a brother who is a 25 year old, lean and tall (6'3'') Asian dude. His fashion sense is solid for professional wear but he really doesn't put any effort in casual wear. He probably hasn't updated his wardrobe in about 2 years. When he does want to look casual nice, he'll bring out the the striped black and grey t-shirt and khaki shorts my sister and I picked for him 3 years ago. Otherwise, he's comfortable in a white t-shirt and basketball shorts.

It's hard for me to buy things for him because he's so simple. He would most likely shop at Target if he had to pick a place. His interests are dogs and that's pretty much it. He likes sports and video games but he's not the type of guy to wear shirts displaying such icons. His favorite casual shirts right now are light blue shirts with a blank imprint of a man riding a bicycle with a panda hat. His favorite colors are blue and red. Please help me find some no-fuss casual shirts for him!

Hello Anne!

First of all, I (Clare) can relate to this particular request because I also have a brother who has a simplistic taste in clothes. Up until a couple of years ago, his wardrobe mainly consisted of jeans, basketball shorts, basic tees, and a handful of polos in limited shades of white, blue, and black. These days you can still see him sporting a pair of jeans and casual tee. But his personal style and the way he wears these pieces has definitely matured in a good way. Just below are some tips I've learned from shopping with him.

First of all, a casual t-shirt should be a staple in any wardrobe for both men and women. The classic tee is like a versatile canvas that offers a wide range of styling options. The right casual tee however can be tricky to find so here are some things to keep in mind.

Fit & Fabric. Finding the right fit makes a huge difference. You want to find a casual tee that is neither skin tight nor over-sized and baggy for a more put-together look. Some brands for men will indicate "slim fit" and this particular fit can be especially flattering for someone with a lean body type. As for the fabric, we recommend thicker shirts made of cotton or polyester blends as they look more substantial and durable. Banana RepublicGapOld Navy, Express and H&M all offer a selection of good quality casual tees (sometimes for reduced price if you catch them during sales and markdowns).

When you want to make a casual tee look more clean-cut and put together, consider the other pieces of clothing your pairing the shirt with. In addition to the khakis your brother is already wearing, we'd also recommend chino shorts. Chinos are made of 100% cotton which make them both light and comfortable to wear, and they can come in a variety of colors. We suggest finding a pair of gray or navy blue chinos. And just like the casual tee, always keep the fit of the shorts in mind: nothing too tight nor too loose. Top it all off with matching sneakers and sunglasses and you've got yourself a neat no-fuss outfit to wear to the dog park.

Casual tees are great but for a more dapper look, we recommend a nice casual button down shirt or polo. Here's an outfit your brother can wear when going to the movies or to dinner at a restaurant. We've paired the shirt with dark wash jeans (another staple that should be included in any wardrobe). We also recommend a pair of imitation leather sneakers and a watch to give this outfit a mature and polished look.

We hope you and your brother find our suggestions helpful! If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.

  1. Thank you! I really like that dapper look. I could totally see my brother pulling it off...I just need to get it on him somehow!
